Home to me is… “the place I can be natural”.
Design to me is…: “To think about architecture is religious to me and to educate is my hobby.I am the last student of Louis I. Kahn. There is nothing that interests me except architecture. (If there is, eating maybe).”
Chiaki Arai was born in 1948 in Shimane, Japan and has studied architecture from Musashi Institute of Technology (Tokyo City University) and University of Pennsylvania, Greater London Council. He established Chiaki Arai Urban & Architecture Design in 1980 for City Planning, Urban Design, Architectural Design, Landscape Design, Interior Design, and Research.
He has been a lecturer at Musashi Institute of Technology, Tokyo City University and Tokyo Institute of Technology.
Chiaki Arai Urban & Architecture Design was founded in 1980 and is a Tokyo based practice with a staff of 16 people, and has designed about 50 high quality buildings. It has received a number of domestic and international awards including two-time AIJ Prize 1996 and 2002, ARCASIA Award Gold Medal in 1998 and JIA Grand Prix 2009. The current project in process is Odawara Art and Culture Center.
